First Alert Forecast: Good trade wind weather today

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Trade winds will stick around through the weekend and start to calm down a little bit early next week. Right now, there’s moisture that rode in with the trade winds; so the windward sides of the Hawaii Island and Maui got more rain overnight. But don’t worry—by later today and into tomorrow, drier air will be with us meaning more sunshine and way fewer showers on the windward sides. When we get to early next week, those typical trade wind showers will come back, and thatʻs Hawaiiʻs weather at its best.

Last night there was a bunch of moisture moving through on the trade winds, which caused extra rain showers across the windward sides of Hawaii Island and Maui. Some areas received between a third and half an inch of rain. This moisture is moving westward and will be replaced by drier air tomorrow, which means fewer showers and more sunshine. The trade winds will be breezy today but will calm down a bit on tomorrow

What to expect next week:

Next week will go back to the typical summer pattern for Hawaii, with showers mainly on the windward sides (the sides facing the trade winds) and mountain areas, especially overnight and early in the morning. The Kona slopes will also see their normal afternoon clouds and showers. The trade winds will be a bit lighter early in the week but will pick back up and become breezy again by the second half of the week.

The small west-northwest swell is fading away this weekend. This means the small or flat waves for the north shore, great for small animals and the keiki. However, the south-facing beaches will keep their bigger waves and stay around normal levels through Saturday. But a bigger swell is on the way and will arrive Sunday through early next week. This swell could get strong enough on Monday and Tuesday to trigger a High Surf Advisory, which means the waves will be pretty big and potentially dangerous. After that swell dies down in the middle of next week, another moderate swell is expected to show up on Thursday.

East-facing beaches:

The east-facing beaches will gradually calm down as the trade winds ease. There’s also a tropical storm named Elida that might send some energy our way in the middle of next week, which could give the east-facing beaches a little boost in wave action.
