Kauai festival honors island’s plantation roots in Koloa

KAUAʻI (HawaiiNewsNow) – A 10-day festival is celebrating Kauaʻi’s first sugar plantation, established in Kōloa in 1835, and those who worked on it.

Kōloa Plantation Days kicked off Friday, July 17, and runs through Sunday, July 26, at various locations in the south-shore community.

The festivalʻs opening ceremony and pāʻina starts at 5 p.m. at Kōloa Village and features a blessing, hula and live music by Kawai and Jonah Pascua.

The festival is celebrating its 40th anniversary with the theme “The Last Harvest,” and offers a variety of events, including guided walking tours, a heritage craft fair and culinary market, and keiki activities.

Most events are free and open to the public; others require registration or an admission fee.
