Training helps Maui postal employees prevent dog attacks, bites

WAILUKU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Wailuku Post Office is helping mail carriers learn how to respond to aggressive dogs to prevent potential attacks and bites.

The office invited Sit Means Sit Hawaii to provide training Tuesday that focused on basic obedience and behavior modification techniques for dogs of all ages and breeds.

The U.S. Postal Service reported more than 5,200 attacks on postal employees across the country last year. Hawai’i had nine dog bites last year, down from 2024.

USPS says if carriers feel unsafe, mail service can be stopped and will have to be picked up at by the dog owners.

USPS runs a National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign that offers information on how dog owners can be good stewards for safe mail delivery.
