The city’s Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) will begin two perimeter fencing projects this month for gardens in Makiki District Park and Ala Wai Neighborhood Park.

Officials said six-foot-tall fences will be constructed around both community garden sites, with several gates for access for gardeners and city staff.

DPR said the Makiki garden fencing project will begin Monday, June 22, while the Ala Wai garden project will begin on Tuesday, June 30.

The city said community members from both gardens reportedly experienced numerous cases of vandalism, theft and safety concerns from unauthorized personnel and requested additional fencing.

“I’m grateful to see these fencing projects moving forward in our community. The gardeners deserve a safe, welcoming space in our neighborhood to grow fresh food, foster connections with others, and strengthen our community,” said Honolulu City Councilmember Scott Nishimoto.

The nearly $81,000 contract for the Maikiki fence and the nearly $135,000 contract for the Ala Wai fence were awarded to Supreme Island Fencing.

Both projects are expected to be completed at the beginning of Fall 2026, weather permitting, the city said.
