The National Weather Service in Honolulu says waves are expected to rise to 8 to 12 feet by Sunday morning and then peak at 10 to 14 feet in the afternoon.

West shores exposed to the south-southwest swell are forecast to rise to 7 to 10 feet by Sunday afternoon. The waves could impact areas like Kailua-Kona on Hawaii Island and the Kaanapali coast of Maui, which are normally protected from the large wintertime swells from the northwest.

Honolulu Ocean Safety lifeguards are urging caution as the waves will impact some of Oahu’s most popular beaches, including Waikiki, Ala Moana and China Walls.

Beachgoers, especially visitors who are unfamiliar with local ocean conditions are urged to use caution and be alert for strong breaking waves and strong currents that will make swimming difficult and dangerous.

“Large south swells can create deceptively dangerous conditions, even at beaches that may appear calm at first glance,” said Honolulu Ocean Safety Department spokesperson Chris Latronic.

He added, “We encourage everyone to assess conditions carefully, heed all warning signs and lifeguard instructions, and choose beaches appropriate for their skill level. Know your limits and when in doubt, don’t go out!”
