State gives owner 72 hours to address wrecked vessel at Makena Landing

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – State officials are investigating after a vessel washed onto rocks at Mākena Landing on Maui.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation said it is aware of the Kai Kanani II wreck and has contacted the vessel’s owner.

Witness drone video shows the boat resting on rocks near the shoreline.

The vessel is used for sunset snorkeling tours, and a witness reported a strong smell of diesel fuel from shore.

DOBOR said the owner contacted his insurance provider, which has dispatched a salvage company to provide a bid.

The state posted a notice on the vessel Monday informing the owner that he has 72 hours to address the wreck before the state steps in.

Officials also emailed the owner about the notice and said a certified letter will be mailed Tuesday.
