Prosecutors and police hold school supplies and snack drive for West Oahu students

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Honolulu police officers partnered with the City and the Prosecutor’s Office to collect school supplies, snacks, and other donated items for students in West Oahu.

The participating departments held a press conference Friday to present the donations to HPD’s School Resource Officer Program on the Westside.

The resource officers will give the items to students who may not have access to the necessary supplies otherwise.

The drive is part of a program called Safe & Sound Westside, an initiative between the Prosecutor’s Office, HPD, and community partners.

School resource officers at Waianae High School and Nanakuli High and Intermediate Schools will give the items to students.

Prosecuting Attorney Steve Alm and HPD Chief David Lazar and other leaders spoke at the press conference about the importance of the collaborative effort to support and improve public safety on the Leeward side.

“What HPD is doing with the school resource officers is outstanding,” Alm said. “They’ve carefully selected retired officers who have the heart to work with kids, be role models, be trying to help them navigate things.”

HPD oversees the School Resource Officer Program, which places retired officers on school campuses.

“Public safety is not only about holding offenders accountable -it is also about investing in our young people and supporting the trusted adults who work with them every day,” Alm said. “Our employees generously contributed these supplies, and we are proud to partner with Chief Lazar and HPD to support the School Resource Officers and the students they serve.”
