Maui police hold illegal fireworks and gun buyback event

KAHULUI (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Maui Police Department is hosting an illegal fireworks and gun buyback event Saturday, Sept. 19, in Kahului.

The buyback event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Maui Service Center on Alaihi Street.

MPD partnered with the Governor’s Office, the Department of Law Enforcement, and the Honolulu Police Department to organize the event.

Foodland gift cards will be handed out in exchange for illegal fireworks and guns, no questions asked.

In exchange for turning in mortars and display fireworks, MPD will give out $10 per pound. For cakes, canisters, aerial shells, Roman candles, and other illegal fireworks, MPD will give out $5 per pound. All in the form of Foodland gift cards.

Please note, MPD will not accept any retail fireworks, homemade or modified fireworks, and improvised explosives.

MPD will also hand out $200 gift cards per gun for assault-type rifles and ghost guns, and $100 per gun for handguns, rifles, shotguns, and Glock switches.

Ammunition will not be accepted.

To participate in the buyback event, secure all items in containers, place them in the vehicle’s trunk, and wait for officials to retrieve the items.
