Man killed by fallen tree in Waimanalo as Hurricane Lowell passes identified

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A man killed when a large tree fell on his tent at Sherwood Beach during severe weather Monday has been identified.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as 31-year-old Floyd Ruiz.

Police responded to Sherwood Beach around 8:35 p.m. Monday after a large tree trunk fell on him.

Gov. Josh Green said Ruiz had been living in a tent at the park.

“That individual was a homeless individual living in a tent, and a tree fell on him,” Green said. “We’re doing what we can to recover, but this was a very serious storm.”

The Medical Examiner’s Office said Ruiz died from multiple blunt force injuries.

Hurricane Lowell passed just west of the islands Monday night, bringing damaging tropical storm-force winds and heavy rain to Oʻahu.

The Honolulu Police Department classified the incident as an unattended death and said foul play was not suspected.
