Hokulea pauses Moananuiakea Voyage due to weather concerns

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – In New Zealand, Hōkūleʻa’s Moananuiākea Voyage is on pause due to weather conditions.

The Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS) has not announced how the delay will impact the greater voyage plans.

Both Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia have been in Aotearoa (New Zealand) since November 2025.

In July, PVS said it was adjusting the Moananuiākea Voyage due to elevated weather risks and climate outlooks after tracking El Niño data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The revised plan called for the canoes to visit Fiji to participate in the annual United Nations Climate Change Conference and then make return visits to Aotearoa, the Cook Islands and French Polynesia.

PVS previously said additional planned stops in 2027 will include American Samoa, Samoa, Tonga, and the regions of Melanesia and Micronesia.
