First Alert Forecast: Moke’s outer bands will impact the Big Island of Hawaii initially this weekend

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Tropical Depression Two-C slowly found its footing this morning and is now officially Tropical Storm Moke.

The good news on the path front: official NHC forecasts keep the center of the storm passing south of the island chain.

Even with the center of Moke staying south, tropical systems throw weather far out from their core—so we’ll still see significant impacts, especially on the Big Island and East Maui.

Forecast Rainfall Highlights:

Big Island: General totals of 5 to 10 inches, with isolated maximums reaching 15 inches.

Eastern Maui: Totals of 1 to 5 inches, with localized maximums up to 10 inches over the mountains.

Remainder of Hawaiian Islands: General rainfall of 1 to 2 inches expected. Some heavier rain on the mountains.

Primary Threat: High risk of life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides across windward and southeast Big Island, especially given saturated soils and vulnerability following recent impacts from Lala.

Surf & Ocean Conditions

The Waves: Rough, elevated swells build over the weekend and stick around into early next week.

The Danger: Hazardous breaking waves and life-threatening rip currents along exposed shores. If you’re heading anywhere near the water, keep an eye on local lifeguard warnings and ocean reports.

Keep an eye on local updates as Moke develops, hold off on unnecessary travel in flood-prone areas on the Big Island, and malama each other this weekend!
