Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor parking lot reopens after damage from Hurricane Lowell repaired

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The state has reopened the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor recreational user parking lot after damage from Hurricane Lowell was repaired.

On Friday, the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) reopened the lot at 2 p.m.

DOBOR staff said on Tuesday that they found the parking lot filled with boulders, sand and water during the pre-dawn hours as Lowell passed north of the state. The debris damaged parts of the asphalt, creating safety hazards.

The parking lot was promptly closed to remove debris as engineers conducted safety inspections and repaired hazardous areas.

DOBOR said the repairs were also an opportunity to apply fresh paint to the parking lines in the lot.

“I want to acknowledge the hard work of our staff and contractors that made this reopening happen so quickly,” said DOBOR Administrator Meghan Statts. “We know this is a popular area for accessing the ocean and are pleased to welcome parking lot users back.”
