First Alert Forecast: A hot and humid period of watching and waiting

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The trade winds are light to moderate and that’s making for warm and sticky conditions across the state. Showers are few and far between… some could pop-up over interior sections this afternoon. Highs will range from 83-90 degrees.

We’re watching two areas to our east that have potential for tropical storm development. The nearest area (about 1300 miles to our east-southeast) has a 90% chance of forming in the next 48 hours. The National Hurricane Center is calling it Invest 90E. Once the tropical cyclone has formed, it will be called Moke (if it forms in the Central Pacific) or Iselle (if it forms in the East Pacific).

The current American Model (GFS) brings the system toward Hawaii Island but has it passing well south of South Point. If the model’s course is correct, there would be some outer bands of showers and wind impacting Hawaii Island and to a lesser extent the other islands. The National Hurricane Center will issue an official forecast once the tropical cyclone has formed.

Quick word about surf… swell energy from a recent New Zealand storm will impact the south shores of all islands this holiday weekend. The first waves should arrive late Thursday.
