Federal highway administrator to tour Oahu, Maui transportation projects

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A top federal transportation official will visit Hawaii next week to review several major highway projects on Oahu and Maui.

Federal Highway Administration Administrator Sean McMaster will join Hawaii Department of Transportation Director Ed Sniffen for site visits tied to emergency relief and infrastructure funding.

On Monday, the two will visit culvert repairs near Kamehameha Highway and the westbound H-3 Freeway on-ramp to discuss emergency relief funding, remaining work and the expected reopening of the ramp.

They will also tour the temporary pedestrian bridge next to the Gulick Avenue Overpass, which is set to close for a year beginning Sept. 21 as crews widen the eastbound H-1 Freeway and raise the overpass.

On Thursday, McMaster and Sniffen will travel to Maui to meet with Mayor Richard Bissen and Goodfellow Brothers Chief Operating Officer Ed Brown in Olowalu.

The group will hold a ceremonial contract and grant signing for the Honoapiilani Highway Improvements Project.

That project is aimed at protecting a section of the highway that is routinely threatened by high surf by moving the roadway farther inland.
