Community kicks off King Kamehameha Day with traditional tribute

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Thursday is King Kamehameha Day in Hawaii.

This year marks the 154th annual celebration of the legendary ruler who famously unified the Hawaiian Islands.

Community members gathered for a traditional tribute at the statue of King Kamehameha I by Ali’Iolani Hale.

Festivities continue through the weekend, with a lei draping ceremony at 5 p.m., Friday, June 12, in front of the same statue at Ali’Iolani Hale.

Then the Floral Parade and Hoolaulea will both take place on Saturday.

The 109th Floral Parade is set to begin at 9 a.m., at Iolani Palace, and is expected to wrap up around 1 p.m., at Kapiolani Park.

Saturday’s Hoolaulea goes from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Kapiolani Park.
