Motorcyclist dies after crash on Maui

MAKAWAO (HawaiiNewsNow) – A 48-year-old Haiku man has died after a motorcycle crash in Makawao.

It happened on Wednesday just before 10:30 p.m. near the intersection of Mahiai Place and Piiholo Road in Makawao.

According to the Maui Police Department, a black and red 2006 Honda CRF223F motorcycle was traveling northbound on Piiholo Road when the rider failed to make a left bend in the roadway and went up an embankment.

The motorcyclist was ejected from the motorcycle and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

MPD said they are withholding the man’s identity for 24 hours to allow his family to notify extended family and friends.

Police said the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet.

The investigation is ongoing, and police have not determined if speed, drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

This is Maui County’s fifth traffic fatality of 2026, compared to 11 at the same time last year.
