A celebration honoring that historic journey is scheduled at Iolani Palace during its free monthly Kamaʻāina Sunday event on June 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Organizers said residents and visitors will have the chance to learn more about Hōkūleʻa’s legacy and the generations of navigators, crew members, educators and community leaders who carried forward Polynesian voyaging traditions.
The event will feature hula, live music and a panel discussion featuring members of the original 1976 crew.
“Few stories have shaped modern Hawaiʻi as deeply as Hōkūleʻa,” said Paula Akana, who will moderate the panel discussion. “This Kamaʻāina Sunday gives families a chance to hear from voyagers, learn through hands-on activities and reflect on the knowledge, courage and kuleana that continue to guide Hawaiʻi and the Pacific.”

There will also be a full slate of activities, including voyaging demonstrations, lessons on navigating by the stars, and mini canoe model building.
Self-led audio tours will also be available throughout the day for kamaʻāina with a valid Hawaiʻi state ID, driver’s license or proof of Hawaiʻi residency, organizers said.
Gov. Josh Green, Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi and the Hawaii State Senate will also deliver commemorative messages.
Organizers said the Kīnaʻu Gate on Richards Street opens at 8:30 a.m., and the Kauikeaouli Gate on King Street opens at 9 a.m.
