Congressional candidate allegedly threatens Maui County workers with firearm

WAILUKU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Maui police arrested a congressional candidate after he allegedly threatened Maui County workers with a firearm in Wailuku on Friday.

According to the Maui Police Department, at around 9:30 a.m., Congressional candidate Kirill Basin, 40, of Kihei, allegedly entered a county building located off Main Street while brandishing a firearm and had a verbal altercation with county employees.

The altercation was reported to police shortly before 11 a.m.

MPD said officers responded within five minutes and implemented a partial lockdown while officers searched for Basin.

An all-points bulletin was issued, and police located Basin in Kihei at around 12:30 p.m.

Maui police said the preliminary investigation revealed that on Wednesday, during a South Maui town hall meeting, Basin was involved in a verbal altercation with council member Tom Cook and staff members. Officers escorted him out of the meeting.

Basin was arrested for terroristic threatening in the first degree. Police said additional charges are pending review.

MPD said the investigation is ongoing, and no further information is available at this time.
