Dead hammerhead sharks found dumped near bridge in Hawaii Kai

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – State officials are investigating after approximately seven juvenile hammerhead sharks were found dumped near a bridge in Hawaiʻi Kai over the past several days.

A young man walking home from Kaiser High School reported spotting the dead sharks on the grass near the bridge leading toward the post office.

After reviewing photographs of the animals, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources said the sharks may have been discarded as bycatch from a fishing net.

State officials noted that capturing sharks is generally illegal under Hawaiʻi law and dumping them constitutes criminal littering.
