Over 250 pizzas airlifted to help feed Kauai after Hurricane Lowell

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Salvation Army Hawaiian and Pacific Islands Division and its partners airlifted several helicopters full of more than 250 pizzas Thursday to help those in Kauai refuge shelters after Hurricane Lowell.

The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) partnered with Domino’s Hawaii and Rainbow Helicopters to airlift the food for a mass feeding distribution on Kauai in designated refuge centers between Kapaa and Waimea.

The nonprofit said the 255 pizzas were enough to feed 1,000 people on the island who are dealing with the widespread destruction and power outages across Kauai.

“To have partners that are willing to step in and really do whatever it takes to meet the needs of the community, Domino’s Hawaii and Rainbow Helicopters didn’t skip a beat,” said Salvation Army’s corporate relations director Heather Wong.

The pizza flight departed from Honolulu on three Rainbow Helicopters and arrived in Lihue at 4 p.m.

“We are just like really happy to hopefully bring some joy after the hard weekend and Monday and just hopefully bring over some good food and bring it over to the shelters so people can really maybe have a smile on their face after a hard weekend,” said Nicole Battjes, owner of Rainbow Helicopters.

The nonprofit said some of the pizza was also passed out to stranded travelers at Lihue Airport as intermittent power outages triggered major Transportation Security Administration screening delays, with some passengers waiting in line for seven hours.
