DHHL awards 200 residential leases in new East Hawaii homestead

It’s the first residential offering in East Hawaii from the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) in more than 20 years.
It’s been a long time coming for tens of thousands of Native Hawaiians who’ve been waiting for lands they had been promised under the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, which was signed into law 105 years ago.
“The fast track is really, it should have been done 100 years ago because we had too many people dying on the waitlist,” said Kali Watson, Hawaiian Homes Commission chair.

The Panaewa homestead, a more than 334-acre parcel, will be the site of 400 residential lots.
“It was really seamless and easy for me. I know a lot of people have stories of waiting for a really long time, but for me, I got to come during this administration, so it was easy for me,” said awardee Britney Kalua.
Development for the project is slated to begin in 2030.
Watson added that six to seven more projects on Hawaii Island are in the process of construction and design.
