Coast Guard, partners respond to oil spill at Ala Wai Harbor

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Crews are responding to an oil spill at Ala Wai Harbor in Honolulu.

The Coast Guard said it is working with the state Department of Health and the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation on the response.

Officials said red dye diesel was reported near the docks on the north side of the harbor Sunday night.

Pollution responders with Pacific Environmental Corporation are working to contain the spill and recover diesel from the water. Crews have deployed sorbent pads and sweep as part of the cleanup.

The amount and source of the spill remain unknown and are under investigation.

Officials said there have been no reports of injuries or impacts to wildlife.

The Coast Guard said boom will remain in place from Monday afternoon through Thursday morning for mitigation efforts. Vessels inside the boom will need to stay in place until it is removed.

Members of the public are asked to keep a safe distance from the response area.
