The crash occurred at around 3:15 p.m. near the Mahiai St. intersection.

According to police, a 67-year-old male motorist was traveling westbound on Kapiolani Boulevard when he made a U-Turn and was hit by a motorcyclist traveling westbound.

The motorcyclist, a 51-year-old man, was ejected onto the road and taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he died. Police said he was wearing a helmet.

Nearby lawmaker describes ‘very loud crash,’ response

State Rep. Ikaika Olds, D-McCully, Moiiliili, was campaigning in the area when it happened.

“I heard the screeching and then I heard the collision,” he said. “As soon as I saw the motorcycle on the ground, I dropped all my things and I went running over.”

Olds said he yelled at bystanders to call 911 before approaching the rider to check for responsiveness and breathing.

“He was face down. It didn’t look like he was breathing. His chest was not rising and falling,” Olds said. “It doesn’t feel good to see someone face down in the middle of the road, lots of blood.”

Police said the 67-year old male motorist was not hurt and remained at the scene.

“We did get to read the eyewitness testimony from the individuals that were there that did file our police reports were saying that an individual was trying to make an illegal U-turn,” Olds said. “And this motorcyclist, as he’s making that turn, struck him kind of T-bone style. And it was loud. It was a very loud crash.”

Olds: Speeding, U-turns common along ‘problematic corridor’

Olds said the area is prone to speeding and illegal U-turns, noting that that stretch of Kapiolani Boulevard is “a problematic corridor because it’s six lanes. The speed limit is 35 miles an hour, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but there is a freeway off-ramp that feeds into that space, and there’s a freeway on-ramp heading eastbound that’s just ahead. So it’s a very heavily trafficked area.”

Olds said he is pushing to add more pedestrian safety and traffic devices in the area.

“It’s very common for people to come off on the Kapiolani off-ramp and make an illegal turn because as you head westbound, you cannot turn onto Date Street,” Olds explained. “So what people do is they try to very quickly make the left turn into that side road there that can connect you to Date.”

Police said speed does not appear to be a contributing factor in this collision. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol are factors.

This is the 23rd traffic fatality on Oahu this year, compared to 44 during the same time in 2025.
