No tsunami threat to Hawaii after 6.7 earthquake southeast of Loyalty Islands

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck southeast of the Loyalty Islands early Monday, but officials say there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The National Weather Service’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a Tsunami Information Statement at 4:55 a.m. HST, reporting the quake’s preliminary origin time as 4:46 a.m. HST Monday.

The center listed the earthquake’s preliminary location at 23.0 degrees south latitude and 171.4 degrees east longitude.

In its evaluation, the warning center said, “Based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected, and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.” The bulletin added that the statement was for information only and that no action was required.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said this is expected to be the only statement issued for the event unless additional data are received.
