Andre Alves de Moraes, owner of Tropical Tribe, joined us on HNN’S Sunrise Weekends to showcase their diverse range of açai bowls along with why this fruit is so popular.

“We’ve been here in Hawaii for 15 years already. This was my very first business and when I got here to Hawaii,” Moraes said. “I saw how Acai was popular, a lot of Brazilian teams were bringing it to Hawaii, but the acai that we were making on the island was not quite exactly the same that I used to have in Brazil.”

Customers can customize their own açaí bowls with honey, granola, fruit, and more, and choose from smoothies and lattes.

Founded in 2011, Tropical Tribe began as a small lunch wagon and uses a traditional Brazilian method that blends açaí with guaraná, another berry from the Amazon rainforest.

They say that other places in the U.S. serve blends that mix açaí with other fruits and become a fruit blend.

Tropical Tribe’s açaí comes from Belém do Pará in Brazil, which is the native region of açaí, and they work with local communities.

Tropical Tribe has two Waikiki locations: one at Discovery Bay, across the street from the former Red Lobster, and a second at Waikiki Shore.
