2 longtime musicians inducted into Ukulele Hall of Fame at festival

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -Two longtime musicians were inducted into the Ukulele Hall of Fame Sunday.

The honor went to Benny Chong and Byron Yasui during an induction ceremony at the International Ukulele Festival of Hawaii, recognizing the musicians, educators and performers for decades of contributions to the ʻukulele and Hawaiian music.

“These two honored elders, whose lives, creativity and inspiration have had a profound impact on musicians across many generations, are living sources of Hawaiian culture and musical wisdom,” said Paul Syphers, president of the ʻUkulele Hall of Fame Museum.

Chong, 83, is known for his innovative jazz ukulele style and his work with Don Ho and the Aliʻis. Yasui, 85, is a longtime University of Hawaii music professor whose compositions helped bring the ukulele into the classical music world.

The pair join more than two dozen Hall of Fame inductees, including King David Kalākaua, Israel Kamakawiwoʻole, Eddie Kamae and Herb Ohta Sr.
