Keawaula section of Kaena Point State Park to reopen July 1

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Part of Kaena Point State Park is set to reopen just in time for the Fourth of July weekend.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources said the Keawaula section will reopen July 1 after emergency repairs addressed roadway damage from the March Kona low storms.

Officials said work began after inspections by the Federal Emergency Management Agency last week.

While the park will reopen, parts of the trail between Keawaula and Kaena Point will remain closed because of storm damage that still requires repairs and rerouting. The Kaʻena Point Natural Area Reserve remains accessible from the Mokuleia side.

Construction projects already underway before the storm—including repaving and comfort station improvements—are expected to resume in mid-July. Brief weekday closures may be necessary, but officials said the park will remain open on weekends whenever possible.

“We appreciate the public’s patience as we worked diligently to get the park reopened in time for this popular holiday weekend,” Acting State Parks Administrator Alan Carpenter said.

Visitors are reminded that overnight camping and fireworks are prohibited at Kaena Point State Park.
