Officials say an estimated 1,000 gallons of wastewater spilled between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m., on Tuesday, from the station near Kuhio Highway and Maalo Road.
A communication failure between the pump station’s control system and the pumping equipment caused wastewater levels to rise in the pump station wet well, according to the county.
Wastewater eventually overflowed out of a manhole onto the road, and now officials say it may have entered a nearby stream that feeds into public waters.

The communication issue that caused the spill has since been fixed.
Crews were able to pump down the well and the wastewater that had ponded on the road before disinfecting the area.
The pump station has since returned to normal operations.
