Police identify pedestrian killed in Kahului collision

KAHULUI, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) – Authorities have identified the 61-year-old pedestrian fatally struck by an SUV earlier this week in Kahului as Lynette Kealoha of Wailuku.

According to the Maui Police Department, the collision occurred Wednesday at approximately 9:43 p.m. on Kaahumanu Avenue, near the South Wakea Avenue intersection.

Investigators said a white 2013 Chevrolet Equinox was traveling eastbound in the inner lane when it struck Kealoha as she attempted to cross northbound outside of a marked crosswalk.

Kealoha suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the SUV, a 70-year-old Wailuku man, was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

Police said the collision remains under investigation, and authorities have not yet determined whether speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.

The incident marks Maui County’s eighth traffic fatality of 2026, compared to 12 at the same point in 2025.
