First Alert Forecast: Some sun, clouds, windward and mauka trade showers

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Those winds will ease up a bit tomorrow but stay moderately windy into early next week. Expect light, brief showers mainly on the eastern sides of the islands and in the mountains, mostly at night and in the morning. The drier, leeward side may catch an occasional shower too. Starting Sunday night, things get noticeably wetter as a surge of moisture moves through the islands next week.

This weekend brings typical summer weather for Hawaii — steady trade winds with light, brief showers, and winds easing up a bit on Sunday as the high-pressure system that drives them shifts away. Sunday night into Monday, a surge of extra moisture moves in, boosting shower chances. The mountains will force that moist air upward, squeezing out some moderate showers mainly on the wet, eastern sides of the islands and in the mountains.

By Tuesday into Wednesday, a bigger batch of moisture arrives, bringing more widespread showers — including on the normally dry, leeward sides. Anywhere that doesn’t get showers will feel hot and sticky with thick, humid air. There’s also a weather system far to the west that could punch up the rain if it drifts closer, though that’s still uncertain. Either way, some brief heavy downpours are possible mid-week. Stay tuned for updates.

The current south swell is fading and surf will drop below normal by tonight. A new south swell arrives late Saturday, peaks Sunday, then gradually backs off early next week — bringing surf back up to about average for this time of year. On the east-facing shores, expect rough, choppy conditions with a slight improvement possible early next week. North-facing shores will stay very flat through at least the middle of next week, with only a tiny bump possible on Saturday from a small swell coming in from the west-northwest.
