First Alert Weather Day: Possible heavy rain and thunderstorms

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Flood Watch: Ni’ihau through Maui with a Flood Advisory up for Kauai, possibly through this afternoon and may be extended into the evening hours. A weather system is moving through the islands right now. Expect heavy rainfall and possible thunderstorms through the day today and possibly into this weekend.

Not everyone will get in on the rainfall, but with the light winds, there is a chance for showers to linger in areas; when this happens, there is the potential for flash flooding.

An unstable upper-level low continues to drop into the islands from the north this morning with thunderstorms forming less than 100 miles north of Niihau, Kauai, and Oahu. Expect periods of heavy showers along with isolated to scattered thunderstorms today across the islands in Kauai County, Oahu, and Maui County.

Avoid driving through flooded areas — even shallow water can sweep cars away. Don’t go near streams, rivers, or low-lying areas; You may want to take the umbrella and or rain jacket with you.

Tonight: The system slowly weakens as it moves east, but heavy rain could continue into the overnight hours in some spots. Rain will gradually decrease Saturday for the western side of the state, but Hawaii Island could see numerous showers going into Sunday. Starting Monday into Tuesday, the trade winds will work their way back into the Hawaii weather picture and conditions will improve to windward and mauka showers drifting leeward at times.
