UH men’s basketball team hosts free youth clinic on Kauai

The University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors hosted their annual youth basketball clinic at Kauai High School’s gym.

“It’s awesome to see the smiles on their faces when we get there, and how happy they are to be there,” said UH guard Isaiah Kerr. “Obviously we’re going to bring the energy to make sure it’s a great experience for them.”

It’s an important preseason trip for head coach Eran Ganot to get his team out to the whole state.

“For our guys, it’s understanding their roles as leaders and so it’s been a really feel good event,” said UH head coach Eran Ganot. “We team bond, we travel together, but you see a lot of familiar faces. You see these kids get better. You see new faces, new families, new kids.”

The free camp ran from 9 a.m. to noon and was open to boys and girls in 6th grade and under.

“It’s a huge step for them to be able to see Hawaii basketball, for (the team) to come to Kauai, and we love being able to put that on for them,” said Kerr.

UH has hosted this clinic the last five years in a row, and each year, interest grows.

“There’s a lot of great people in Hawaii, certainly a lot of great kids who aren’t afforded the opportunity to have these kind of clinics. Number one, it’s about community and two it’s about growing the game,” said Ganot.

Following the clinic, the team will fly back to Oahu. Then they’re off to Australia on Thursday.
