HPD welcomes 37 officers in 220th recruit class

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Honolulu Police Department welcomed 37 new officers Friday as its latest recruit class graduated.

The 220th recruit class, made up of 33 men and four women, graduated during a ceremony at Moanalua High School.

“These officers represent the future of the department,” Police Chief David Lazar said. “Their dedication and commitment to serving our community will help shape the next generation of leaders.”

HPD said another recruit class is already training at its police academy. The 222nd class includes 66 recruits — 59 men and seven women — and is expected to graduate in January 2027.

“Seeing our recruitment numbers trend upward is encouraging for both HPD and the communities we serve,” said Maj. Matthew Kurihara, head of the department’s Human Resources Division.

HPD also recently graduated a lateral officer from the Little Rock Police Department through its accelerated training program for officers with prior law enforcement experience.
