UH Hilo, Hawaii Community College to close in anticipation of Lala

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The University of Hawaii at Hilo (UH Hilo) and Hawaii Community College will be closed over the weekend in anticipation of Tropical Storm Lala.

As of Thursday, Lala continues to steadily intensify as it moves toward the island chain.

University officials said UH Hilo and the community college campuses, offices and off-campus locations will be closed Saturday, Aug. 15, through Sunday, Aug. 16, for precautionary measures.

The university expects to resume normal operations Monday, Aug. 17.

All events, including athletic events, are cancelled.

The Imiloa Astronomy Center and the Maunakea Visitors Center will also be closed. Access above the visitor center is restricted to essential personnel.

The university said students and employees are advised to stay at home. For students in residence halls, Residence Life staff members are available to provide assistance.

UH said they will continue to monitor Lala and are working with Hawaii County Civil Defense and other county and state agencies. Updates will be posted online or on UH Hilo’s Facebook and Twitter.
