Red Cross prepares supplies, volunteers ahead of Tropical Storm Lala

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The American Red Cross is requiring its volunteers to undergo refresher training as it prepares to respond to stormy conditions.

Red Cross officials are also urging residents to finalize emergency kits and communication plans as soon as possible.

They also remind residents in remote areas to check on neighbors and stay informed using state and county resources.

Regional chief executive officer Molly Schmidt said the nonprofit believes in resiliency and neighbors helping each other.

“Make sure that if you are in a more remote area, that you’re taking steps now to reach out to each other and have a plan so that you can stay connected and get any resources that you may need when the time comes,” she said.

Schmidt added that when they responded to the Kona lows in March, they knew there would be risks, but this time around, the nonprofit has pre-positioned supplies and volunteers.

To support these efforts, the Hawaii Red Cross is also looking for volunteers.

“We have lots of great ways for everyday people to join neighbor helping neighbor and get involved, make a donation and be a part of your local community making a real difference for your actual neighbor,” Schmidt said.
