Red Cross installs 145 smoke alarms on Kauai

KAUMAKANI VILLAGE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) – Volunteers and staff from the Hawaii Red Cross installed 145 smoke alarms in 63 historic plantation homes in Kaumakani Village over the weekend.

It was part of a larger home fire safety campaign that offers free smoke alarms and installation across the Hawaiian Islands.

Saturday’s smoke alarm installation came in the wake of a nearby brush fire on Sept. 11, which almost prompted evacuations for Kaumakani Village before it was contained.

The Hawaii Red Cross will be installing smoke alarms for anyone in need during the month of October.

According to the Red Cross, the vast majority of the disasters they regularly respond to are home fires.
