Kula Hospital to be restored, reopened after Kona Low damage

MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) – Kula Hospital will be restored and reopened after severe storm damage forced the Upcountry Maui facility to close earlier this year.

The state, Maui Health and Kaiser Permanente announced Tuesday that roughly $65 million will go toward repairing and modernizing the hospital.

The state is providing $42 million, while Kaiser Permanente is investing $23 million.

Kula Hospital, its Emergency Department and the Hale Makamae care facility have been closed since the March 2026 Kona Low storms caused significant damage.

“Kula Hospital has been a cornerstone of the Upcountry Maui community for generations and we are committed to bringing this historic facility back stronger and more resilient,” Gov. Josh Green said.

The project includes repairs and upgrades to resident rooms, activity rooms, nurse stations and other essential building systems.

Exterior windows and doors will also be replaced with weather-protective units designed to meet historic-preservation requirements and better withstand future severe weather.

The work is also expected to allow Hale Makamae residents to eventually return to the Kula Hospital campus.

Those residents were temporarily relocated to Oahu after the storms and have since returned to Maui, where they are staying at an interim location on the Maui Memorial Medical Center campus.

Detailed construction planning is still underway, and Maui Health said a reopening timeline will be announced once it is confirmed.

Kula Clinic remains open, but Kula Hospital’s Emergency Department is still closed.
