Portion of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to reopen following storm damage

HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Kahuku Unit of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is set to reopen after being closed because of damage from Hurricane Lala.

The Kahuku Unit and Visitor Contact Station will resume to normal hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3.

Park staff cleared numerous fallen trees from Kahuku Road and most trails following heavy rain and strong winds from the storm.

Officials said the road beyond the Lower Palm Trailhead remains deeply rutted, and four-wheel drive is recommended for visitors traveling beyond that point.

Kahuku Road remains closed at the cross-fence.

Hikers are also being warned about hanging branches, loose rocks and uneven terrain on trails.

The park’s September Coffee Talk, “Koi: The Hawaiian Adze,” is scheduled for Sept. 26 at 9:30 a.m. at the Visitor Contact Station.
