Part of 11th Avenue closed after Kaimuki restaurant roof collapse

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The City and County of Honolulu has closed a portion of 11th Avenue in Kaimuki due to safety concerns involving a wall at Happy Days Chinese Seafood restaurant.

The roof of the restaurant partially collapsed Tuesday afternoon, sending one woman to the hospital.

The city announced the partial road closure Thursday after the Department of Planning and Permitting inspected and found a critical interior truss collapsed, and the wall facing 11th Avenue is now tilting.

Officials raised concerns about the wall’s stability and potential for collapse if the structure deteriorates further.

As a precaution, the city said it closed the affected portion of the sidewalk and roadway while the structure is further assessed and repairs are determined.

The restaurant remains closed while the owner works to shore up that wall and DPP determines the structure is safe to occupy.

Officials said there is no timeline for reopening 11th Avenue due to the extent of the structural repairs needed.

The city advises the public to avoid the affected portion of 11th Avenue and use alternate routes until further notice.
