Oahu grand jury indicts mother, stepfather in Maili child torture case

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – An Oahu grand jury has indicted two people on multiple felony charges in connection with a child torture case in Waianae.

Honolulu prosecutors said Jasmine Quiroz-Pele, 35, was indicted on two counts of torture and one count of kidnapping. James Heffernan, 36, was indicted on one count of kidnapping and one count of conspiracy to commit torture.

Prosecutors said the indictment also alleges both defendants qualify for extended prison terms as multiple offenders. If imposed, they could face life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Both Quiroz-Pele and Hefernan are currently being held at Oahu Community Correctional Center without bail.
