“Theatre of Terrors: OZ” opens Friday at the Kaimuki High School Performing Arts Center.
Inspired by The Wizard of Oz, the experience takes guests through a darker version of Dorothy’s journey, where characters including the Tin Man, Scarecrow and Lion may not be as helpful as expected.
Students began building the large-scale haunted house set in September, developing the story and creating sets, costumes, makeup and props.
“The students built almost everything that you see,” Director Noah Punohu Nakachi said. “And this year specifically, kids have come up with amazing ideas that I would have never thought of.”
More than 40 student performers and stage technicians from Kaimuki High and other schools are involved in the production.

The haunted house is the fifth annual attraction hosted by the performing arts center, with proceeds supporting student productions, theater supplies and travel.
“All of the proceeds go directly back to the students,” Nakachi said. “So if anyone wants to come down and support, you’ll be supporting the students directly.”
Performances will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday through Sunday, then again from Oct. 28 through Oct. 30.
General admission is $20, and the experience is recommended for ages 13 and older. A “Low Scare” option is available upon request.
