Honolulu adjusts permit testing to expand license renewal appointments
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Honolulu is reducing in-person permit testing at driver licensing centers to make more appointments available for license renewals.
The City and County of Honolulu said demand for driver’s license renewals has increased significantly, with more than 7,400 renewals projected each month through the end of the year.
“With demand for in-person appointments at a peak, these changes allow us to maximize our resources,” Department of Customer Services Director Kim Hashiro said.
Beginning immediately, in-office permit testing will only be offered on select days:
The hours previously dedicated to daily written tests will instead be converted into appointments for driver’s license renewals and other licensing services.

To avoid delays, the city is encouraging applicants to use its online permit test, which is available 24/7 and does not require an appointment. The online exam must be taken on a computer with a working webcam, as smartphones and tablets are not compatible.
Applicants who pass the online test will still need to schedule a brief in-person appointment to finalize and receive their permit.
The city expects elevated demand for licensing appointments to continue through December 2027.
