HECO on power shutoff watch, monitors fire risk conditions
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaiian Electric said it is monitoring high winds and dry conditions in wildfire-prone areas and is prepared to shut off power if needed.

On Friday, HECO said it is in a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) watch, meaning the company may shut off power if weather conditions intensify within 24 to 48 hours.
The utility said it is monitoring conditions in West Maui, Omaopio and Pulehu in Kahului, and areas of Hawaii Island.
If activated, HECO said the outages could happen any time without warning.
During the watch period, HECO said those in the area are urged to initiate their own emergency plans and prepare for the possibility of extended power outages.

“A watch doesn’t mean we will shut off power, only that we are monitoring it closely in areas at the highest risk for wildfires,” said Jim Alberts, Hawaiian Electric senior vice president and chief operations officer. “While we hope shutting off power won’t be necessary, we have to take this threat seriously and we urge our customers to be prepared and stay informed.”
