Hawaii Island police issue nearly 300 DKI Highway citations

HILO (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaii Island police issued nearly 300 citations during a recent traffic enforcement operation along the Daniel K. Inouye Highway.

The Hawaii Police Department said officers issued 283 citations between July 31 and Aug. 2 as part of ongoing efforts to reduce dangerous driving.

Of those, 174 were for speeding. Officers also issued citations for moving violations, seatbelt violations, unsafe passing and vehicle registration issues. Police also made one arrest for operating a vehicle under the influence.

HPD said it has increased its presence along the DKI Highway corridor throughout the summer and will continue targeting speeding, impaired and distracted driving, reckless driving and other behaviors linked to serious crashes.

With students returning to school this week, police are reminding drivers to obey speed limits, wear seatbelts, avoid distractions and never drive impaired.
