Hanauma Bay closure extended for additional repairs

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The temporary closure of Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve has been extended by one week due to additional sewer-related repairs.

The City and County of Honolulu said the preserve is now scheduled to reopen to the public on Wednesday, Aug. 19.

Hanauma Bay had originally been expected to reopen Aug. 12 following the first phase of a sewer improvement project.

City officials said the extended closure will allow in-house park maintenance staff to complete repairs to the beach-level comfort station.

The larger project includes replacing the 35-year-old sewer system serving the beach and parking lot comfort stations, along with repairs and improvements to manholes, the wet well and lift station.

The project is expected to continue through summer 2027.

Another temporary closure is expected in early 2027, with additional details to be announced once confirmed.

Hanauma Bay is regularly closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
