First Alert Forecast: Trade winds will strengthen later this week
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Happy Aloha Monday. Light to moderate trade winds are keeping things fairly comfortable across the islands today, with afternoon sea breezes bringing a few clouds and showers to leeward areas. The Big Island is the main focus for showers today.

A few locally heavier showers are already showing up on radar and moving toward eastern Hawaiʻi Island. An area of extra moisture moving in from the east will bring an increase in windward showers tonight into Tuesday, especially for the Big Island and Maui. The other islands could see a slight increase in showers, too, but overall, drier conditions are expected to hold elsewhere today.
By Wednesday, trade winds will begin to strengthen again, becoming locally breezy by the end of the week and into the weekend.
Most of the showers will favor windward and mountain areas, especially overnight and during the morning hours. Another area of moisture approaching from the east could bring an additional boost in showers late this week into next weekend.
For the beaches, a fresh northwest swell will build tonight into Tuesday, bringing north and west shore surf closer to seasonal averages through Wednesday before gradually easing.
Another north-northwest swell arrives late Friday and should keep surf near seasonal averages through the weekend.

South shore surf will gradually ease over the next few days as the current south-southwest swell fades, with another south swell bringing surf closer to seasonal averages Friday and Saturday.
East shore surf will remain small through Thursday, becoming a little choppier as the trades strengthen later in the week.
Looking ahead, expect a fairly quiet start to the week, with a few more showers for the eastern islands, followed by strengthening trade winds and a more typical windward-and-mountain shower pattern heading into the weekend.
