Roberto Omar Morales Andrade, 49, was convicted in July of eight counts of first-degree sexual assault and eight counts of third-degree sexual assault.

Prosecutors said the abuse began in 2014, when the victim was 9 years old, and continued until she was 13.

According to prosecutors, Morales Andrade was in a relationship with one of the victim’s relatives and lived in the same household, giving him access to the child.

A family member eventually learned of the abuse after discovering a text message the child sent to her then-boyfriend, leading to a report to law enforcement.

“The facts in this case are horrendous and led to the loss of innocence of a young girl,” Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Frank Loyd Jr. wrote in the state’s sentencing memorandum.

County of Maui Prosecuting Attorney Andrew H. Martin also acknowledged the victim for coming forward and testifying.

“Every child deserves to be safe, protected and heard,” Martin said.

Second Circuit Judge Kirsten M. Hamman imposed consecutive prison terms totaling 60 years.
