First Alert Forecast: On the backside of Lala

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Tropical Storm Lala is now well west of Hawaii, and tropical storm warnings and the Flash Flood Watch have been canceled. Lala brought more than 3 feet of rain to Hawaii Island alone and then 3 to nearly 20 inches on Maui County, and 2 to 11 inches on Kauai and Oahu.

Lingering moisture from Lala will keep scattered showers going today, especially across windward and mauka areas. Some spots have already picked up around 0.25–0.55 inches of additional rain this morning.

By Tuesday, a more typical trade-wind pattern returns, with showers favoring windward and mauka slopes and occasional spillover to leeward areas.

Looking ahead: Trades will gradually ease, then veer more east-southeast Thursday night through next weekend, bringing a somewhat different moisture pattern. We will also continue to keep an eye on the tropics as a strengthening El Nino continues and the NHC shows higher chances for storms. Stay tuned. Nothing to be alarmed about but always wise to be prepared for what may develop later in the season.

For the ocean, south shore surf peaks today before slowly declining. Another long-period south swell is expected late this week. East shore surf continues to decrease as Lala moves farther away.
