First Alert Forecast: Hurricane Lowell is a category 5 storm and getting stronger
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Lowell is moving west at 10mph. Best case scenario would have it continuing west until it dissipates. But the forecast calls for the storm to make a right turn and head northerly on Saturday morning. If Lowell heads due north at that point, we’re good. The worst of Lowell would pass well to the west of Kauai and Niihau. However, some computer models show the storm track east of due north and bring Lowell within a couple hundred miles of the Garden Isle. I know it’s cliche, but we need to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

The weather heading into this holiday weekend will be pretty good. Passing showers to keep the islands green and growing, plentiful sunshine, and trade winds that will at times be breezy. The forecast says northeasterly at 15-25 with stronger gusts for most days. Labor Day could be cloudy and wet. But much depends on the track of Lowell.
The current south swell will peak this afternoon and hold to Thursday. Surf from Lowell will build in during the day out of the SSE and then become more southerly tomorrow and Friday. Much like the weather, Lowell’s track and intensity could significantly impact the surf size and duration.
