First Alert Forecast: Hurricane Lowell forecast to pass just west of Kauai late Monday
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Lowell is maintaining its category 4 strength as it moves to the west about 585 miles south of Lihue, Kauai. Conditions are expected to remain favorable for the storm to maintain or even increase in strength over the next 2-3 days. Sometime Saturday Lowell is expected to make a sharp turn to the north and head just east of due north.

The National Hurricane Center expects Lowell to make its closest pass just west of Kauai sometime late Monday or Monday night. The center of the track is about 150 miles west of Kauai but the “cone of uncertainty” or the margin of error includes the western parts of Kauai and all of Niihau. Of course, the forecast could change.
Here are some key messages from the National Hurricane Center:
1. Lowell could be at or near major hurricane strength when it moves near the westernmost main Hawaiian Islands late Monday and Monday night. While it is still too soon to determine the exact track of the hurricane, Lowell could bring storm surge, wind, and rainfall impacts to portions of Hawaii early next week.
2. Interests in Hawaii should continue to closely monitor the progress of Lowell through the upcoming Labor Day weekend, listen to the advice of local officials, and ensure they have their hurricane plan and supply kit in place.

3. Swells from Lowell are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions in portions of the Hawaiian Islands during the next several days. These swells are likely to increase early next week.
